Ways to Avoid Artificial Food Coloring

Artificial food coloring is found in a wide variety of products, including cereals, cookies, cakes, candies, and even yogurts. Unfortunately, it isn’t necessarily safe for your health, and since children are often attracted to the bright colors and the sweet products, it could put them at risk. Here are some simple ways to avoid artificial food coloring:

Make your own

If you’re going to be baking cookies or a cake, you can make your own safe food coloring dyes from vegetables, fruits, and spices. It’s fun, healthy, and gives you vibrant colors.

Read the label

Take a look at the label to see if it lists any colors and numbers. If it does, then you know the product has been colored with an artificial dye. It’s a safe bet that food items targeted towards kids will contain colors.

Shop for whole foods

Ultimately, you can control what your family eats, so choose wisely. Opt to fill your cart with more whole foods, and skip out on processed and packaged items that are more likely to contain questionable ingredients, like artificial food coloring.
